Abstract

<PICT:1097029/C6-C7/1> Apparatus for cooling metal slabs comprises a plurality of wheels secured to a horizontal shaft, each wheel having angularly spaced about the axis a series of apertures of closed contour in which the slabs may be located so that rotation of the shaft causes the slabs to be immersed in the cooling bath. The slabs to be treated are introduced into and subsequently removed from the wheel apertures by means of a roller conveyer which transports the slabs in a direction parallel to the shaft and which is mounted on a movable frame so that it may be brought into alignment with the wheel apertures and then retracted to allow the wheels to rotate. As shown in Fig.1, wheel 10 having apertures 16 is one of four mounted on shaft 12. The slabs may be brought by a conveyer 18, Fig.2 (not shown) and are then introduced into the wheel apertures by a series of powered rolls 22 mounted on arms 26 which are pivoted at 28 so that the rolls may be brought into alignment with apertures 26. A similar arrangement may be located on the opposite side of the wheel to remove the cooled slabs.
