Abstract
1,096,401. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. March 15, 1965 [March 31, 1964], No. 6150/64. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H2]. In a D.C. consumable electrode arc welding system, the arc voltage is varied at a determined frequency, say 1-25 c.p.s., from an upper to a lower level at both of which levels transfer of metal takes place. The voltage drop may be at least 5 volts for spray transfer or 1¢ volts for short circuiting metal transfer. The voltage is controlled by a self saturating transductor 6 the control winding of which is fed in series opposition with the welding voltage from a bistable circuit 58-65 controlled from a multi-vibrator pulsing circuit 45, 46 and 52-57, the mark space ratio being determined by resistors 53, 54. Resistors 71, 72 limit the current under short circuit conditions. The transductor may be replaced by a controlled rectifier arrangement. A shielding gas e.g. a 95% argon 5% oxygen, is used.
