Abstract

A solid, lubricating base compound of formula P2O5.nB2O3.mM2O.pH2O, where n is 1.5 to 2.5, m is 1.5 to 2.5, p is 0.5 to 2.0, M is an alkali metal, is produced by mixing between 100 DEG and 130 DEG C. aqueous solutions of phosphoric and boric acids in the proportion corresponding to the formula, neutralizing the resultant syrup with an alkali metal hydroxide at 100 DEG to 130 DEG C. to give a final pH 1.5 to 8, and dehydrating the neutralized syrup at above 250 DEG C. and below the melting point of the syrup. The compound may be further dehydrated to reduce the value of p to 0 to 0.5. The compounds may be rendered non-hygroscopic by mixing the neutralized syrup homogeneously with either a solution of, or solid, soluble phosphates of beryllium, calcium, magnesium divalent-trivalent iron, aluminium, prior to dehydration. The mixture may be subjected to two or more heat treatments. The compound may also be mixed and simultaneously crushed with metallic oxides such as at least one of Al2O3, PbO, MgO, CaO, FeO, Fe2O3, BeO afte dehydration and the mixture sintered at least at 400 DEG C., then crushed. The products may be crushed to a powder, the powder may be formed into a paste and transformed into filaments or fibres. The products may be treated with a current of dry ammonia. They may be incorporated in natural or synthetic thermoplastic or thermosetting materials such as rubbers, phenol resins, silicones, epoxy resins, polyurethanes, polyesters, polyamides, polyethylenes, polypropylenes, fluorinated resins or polycarbonates. They may be added to metallic powders or a mixture of a metallic powder and one of the aforesaid natural or synthetic materials. The phosphates added may be aluminium monoacid phosphate H3Al2(PO4)3 and magnesium monoacid phosphate HMgPO4 which are prepared by reacting commercial, concentrated orthophosphoric acid in the presence of water with aluminium or magnesium and optionally treated with a flow of dry ammonia.ALSO:A solid, lubricating base compound of formula: P2O5.nB2O3.mM2O.pH2O where n is 1.5 to 2.5, m is 1.5 to 2.5, p is 0.5 to 2.0, M is an alkali metal is produced by mixing between 100 and 130 DEG C aqueous solutions of phosphoric and boric acids in the proportion corresponding to the formula, neutralizing the resultant syrup with an alkali metal hydroxide at 100 DEG to 130 DEG C. to give a final pH 1.5 to 8, and dehydrating the neutralized syrup at above 250 DEG C. and below the melting point of the syrup.
