Abstract

1,096,024. Sheet forming. F. PEACOCK. Sept. 4, 1964 [Oct. 8, 1963], No. 39528/63. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B6] Apparatus for shaping cloth comprises a table top 10 with a hole 28 therein, a clamping member 40 which surrounds the hole 28 and is pivotally attached to framework 12 at a point 34 by a pair of levers 42, and a former 36 which is pivotally attached to a pair of levers 32 which are themselves pivoted at 34. Also attached to levers 32 is a plate 30 which closes off the hole with the former 36 in the raised position, as shown. A steam chamber 46 is disposed inside the former 36 and steam may be applied to the perforated surface of the former via a conduit 54. A vacuum may also be applied to the surface via a conduit (56, Fig. 1). Mounted on the framework 12 is a motor 14 driving two cams 16 and 18 and a swashplate 20. The cams and swashplate operate respectively push rods 22 and 24 and a switch 26 in a desired sequence. The push rods 22 and 24 co-operate respectively with cross-bars 44 and 38 across respective pairs of levers 42 and 32. The operation is as follows:-The cloth to be shaped is placed over hole 28. Motor 14 is started and cam 16 actuates push-rod 22 to pivot levers 42 and move clamping member 40 into engagement with the boundary of the cloth surrounding the hole 28. Cam 18 then causes levers 32 to pivot and move the plate 30 and the former 36 downwardly. The former 36, heated by the steam in chamber 46, contacts the cloth held in position by the clamp 40, and contours it to the shape of the former surface. Swashplate 20 and switch 26 may be arranged to supply steam to the former surface and thus to the cloth before and/or during and/or after the application of pressure to the cloth. A further swashplate or cam (not illustrated) may be provided to control the application of a vacuum to the former surface. The surface of the former and other parts which come into contact with steam are made of rust-proof material, e.g. phosphor bronze. The edge area of the hole 28 may be reinforced with a member 58. In a modification (not illustrated) the former 36 and plate 30 may be operated by other means, e.g. a foot treadle. The former 36 may be heated electrically.
