Abstract

A process for conditioning polycaprolactam to be melt-spun into filaments of homogeneous melt-viscosity comprises drying water-washed polymer granules having a formic acid relative viscosity of 40 to 80 with a standard deviation not above 0.6 measured at 10% concentration in 90% formic acid at 25 DEG C., and a water-extractible content not above 5% by weight, to an average water content in the range 0.035 to 0.115% by wt. and then conditioning the dried granules by continuous contact for at least 2 days at a constant temperature between 30 DEG and 120 DEG C. with non-reactive gas in which the partial pressure of water vapour is between 0.001 and 10 mm. Hg until the standard deviation of water content of the dried granules is not above 0.003% by wt. of the granules. The water content W to which the polymer is brought before melt spinning is preferably related to the temperature T DEG absolute at which the polymer is melt spun by the equations <FORM:1095706/C3/1> where <FORM:1095706/C3/2> and y is the end group concentration given by V = - 285.209+2164.33 y + 11.7188/y. V is the formic acid relative viscosity and a is the concentration of any monobasic acid viscosity stabilizer and C that of amide links in the polymer, both in g equivalents per kilogram.
