Abstract

1,095,741. Vacuum switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 29, 1966 [April 22, 1965] No. 17037/65. Heading H2B. A circuit-breaker comprises two seriesconnected vacuum switch units 1, mechanism 4 for operating the switch units simultaneously and situated between the switch units, two hollow insulators 5 enclosing the switches, a chamber 3 enclosing the mechanism and supporting the insulators, and a post insulator 8 supporting the chamber 3. The spaces within the insulators 5, the casing 3 and the insulator 8 (if hollow) are filled with insulating fluid, e.g. a liquid, or a gas such as sulphur hexafluoride or dry air at atmospheric pressure or above. The chamber 3 may have an inspection opening with a removable cover and be separated from the interior of the insulator 8 by a partition 22. This partition may have a part controlled by a valve which is closed when the inspection opening cover is removed. This valve may be closed automatically by a spring when a cover securing bolt is removed, Figs. 2 and 5 (not shown). The switch units are operated by one or more bell crank levers 15 pivoted at 16 and biased by a spring 19, the lever or levers being moved by a rod 20 which extends internally or externally of the insulator 8. The Specification describes and illustrates, two, four, six, eight and twelve-break, three-phase, circuitbreaker arrangements using the above circuitbreakers and refers to the use of two or more series-connected, parallel-connected or seriesparallel-connected contact pairs in each vacuum switch unit. Voltage dividing impedances, e.g. capacitors, may be provided.
