Abstract
1,095,338. Preventing and extinguishing fires. H. V. WILLIAMS, T. J. ROCHESTER and I. H. ROWNEY. June 10, 1966 [July 14, 1965], No. 29788/65. Heading A5A. Apparatus for preventing or extinguishing a fire in a storage tank, for example, inflammable liquids comprises perforated tubing placed in the lower part of the tank and communicating with the outside of the tank, non- return valve(s) in the tubing preventing escape of the tank contents, and means extending from the tubing to a point remote from the tank which provides a source of pressurised fire extinguishing gas. The perforated tubing may face downwards, spaced at least 18 inches from either the floor of the tank or from any water layer on the floor of the tank. Suitable gases are carbon dioxide, or bromochloro-difluoromethane pressurised with nitrogen.
