Abstract
1,095,258. Linking machines. SOUTHERN TEXTILE MACHINERY CO. Inc. April 21, 1965 [April 21, 1964], No. 16899/65. Heading D1G. A linking machine comprises a curved track disposed radially of the rotary point dial, and a needle carriage slidable on the track for moving the needle in a curved path along successive points. A vertical column 22 supports at its lower end a casing 18 journalling an annular dial 18 carrying radial points 36. A driven shaft 90, journalled in column 22 and casing 18, drives, via a belt 292, a worm (294) meshing with a worm wheel 296 journalled on a shaft 298 and drivingly connectible therewith by clutch means 306, 308, 318. A gear 302, rigid with shaft 298, meshes with a gear ring 304 on dial 38. The clutch means is operable by a hand wheel 328 via a linkage 316. A bracket 236, journalled on shaft 90 and disposed radially thereto, carries at its outer end a curved, radially disposed track 262. A carriage 260, slidable on track 262, supports a curved needle 42 and is connected by a link 254 to a bar 250 slidalble radially on bracket 236. A disc 242, rigid with shaft 90, has a cam track 244 co-operating with a roller 248 on bar 250 for imparting oscillatory movements to carriage 260. A bar 274, slidable radially on bracket 236, carries at its outer end a roller 278 engaging a fixed straight cam track 280, and at its inner end a roller 276 engaging a cam track 246 on disc 242, whereby oscillatory movement is imparted to bracket 236 for moving needle 42 while engaged with a point at the same angular speed of the latter, and for rapidly returning the retracted needle to its initial position. A casing 24, projecting radially from column 22 above casing 18, carries fixedly at its outer end a vertical rod 34. A rod 56, parallel to rod 34, carries at its lower end a looper 50, is journalled intermediately in a ball joint (62) carried by rod 34, and is journalled near its upper end in a ball joint 66 carried by a bracket 160. The lower end of rod 34 carries a presser foot 35 and a casing 67 enclosing looper 50 and presser foot 35. A rod 76, rigid with the upper end of rod 56, is pivoted to a crank arm 79 on a shaft 80 journalled in casing 24. A crank arm 82 on shaft 80 carries a screw stud 132 pivotally connected to one end of a link 122, the other end of which is pivotally connected to a screw stud 128 carried by an arm 116 pivoted at 118 to a plate 100 rigid with casing 24. A shaft 96, journalled in plate 100 and driven by a belt 105 from shaft 90, carries a disc 106 having a cam track 108 engaging a roller 120 on arm 116. Rod 56 thereby receives endwise reciprocation, the extent of which is adjusted by varying the position of link 122 on studs 128, 132. A carriage 158, slidable on shaft 80 and a parallel shaft 156, is rigid with bracket 160 and carries an angularly-adjustable straight cam track 166. A bar 144, slidable on a lateral extension 136 of plate 100, carries at one end a roller 154 engaging cam track 166, and at the other end a roller (150) engaging a cam track (112) in a disc (110) rigid with shaft 96. Carriage 158 is thereby reciprocated on shafts 80, 156, and lateral oscillatory movement is imparted to rod 56 about intermediate ball joint (62). An arm 174, rigid with shaft 56, is connected by a link 182 to a slidable bar 186 carrying an angularly-adjustable straight cam track (200). A bar (210), slidable at right angles to bar 186, carries at one end a roller (224) engaging cam track (200), and at the other end a roller (222) engaging a cam track (114) in disc (110). Rod 56 is thereby oscillated about its longitudinal axis.
