Abstract

1,094,955. Cooling discharge tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Nov. 18, 1965 [Dec. 1, 1964], No. 49022/65. Heading H1D. [Also in Division F4] In an evaporative cooling system for a discharge tube having an external anode 16 immersed in the cooling medium 22, the cooling fluid is sprayed in the form of a stream on to the surface of the anode to disrupt vapour which otherwise tends to form an insulating layer at the anode surface. As shown, tube 10 having a glass or ceramic envelope 12, has its anode 16 immersed in cooling fluid 22 in a boiler 20. The cooling fluid, pure, deionized water, is circulated through inlet pipe 32, manifold 26 and a plurality of pipes 28, which are arranged between the wedge-shaped teeth of the anode, Fig. 2 (not shown), and are formed with apertures 40, so that jets of water are directed on to the anode surface under pressure of the circulating means and carry away vapour bubbles which otherwise tend to collect between the anode teeth. The water leaves boiler 20 via outlet 34 and is pumped around a closed circuit including a heat exchanger, Fig. 4 (not shown), to return to inlet 32. The anode 16, boiler 20 and pipes 28 are of copper, and dimensions of pipes 28 and apertures 40 to obtain a water pressure of 10À5 p.s.i. are given.
