Abstract
1,094,866. Casting processes. E.Q. SYLVESTER. Nov. 1, 1965 [Nov. 23, 1964], No. 46078/65. Heading B3F. In a method of casting using moulds having a bottom pouring opening means are provided to purge the mould cavity prior to casting by the introduction of inert gas into the mould through the pouring opening, to purge the mould at a predetermined rate to avoid turbulence and mixing with the air being displaced. A destructible member 80 of paper, aluminium foil or other similar material is located by a spring clip 82 in the underside of the mould ingate assembly 12. A gasket 86 of asbestos cemented to the member abuts the ingate and an annular passage 78 is defined around the pouring opening of the mould. Inert gas introduced under pressure through zones 59, and 64 into the annular passage 78 acts against the gasket and member 80 flexing it downwards and so admitting the gas radially into the passage 32 and into the mould cavity. Casting material subsequently poured into the mould destroys the member 80 and so fills the mould cavity.
