Abstract

1,094,191. Couplings; electromagnetic switches. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 9, 1964 [Oct. 17, 1963; June 9, 1964], Nos. 41035/63 and 23794/64. Headings H2B and H2E. A connection able to carry a very heavy current is established between members 1 and 2, initially having a very high potential difference, by forcing a plunger 9 through an expendable sandwich 3 between the members so that a layer 5 of soft annealed copper is forced through an insulating layer 4 of polythene into contact with a layer 6 of hard rolled copper, to which it may become welded by the current whch then flows through the contacting parts. The member 1 may have a hard steel insert 10 or it may have a tapered insert of sintered aluminium oxide. The plunger has a tapered hollow tip 11 of steel and is guided by a brass rod 14. It is actuated on closure of an electronic switch 17 which allows a condenser 18 to discharge through a coil 16, the current in the coil and that induced in a disc 13 of the plunger causing the latter to be repelled to perforate the sandwich. The substitution of a new sandwich may be effected automatically.
