Abstract

Filaments made from a normally solid synthetic linear polyester are rendered antistatic by treating them with a polyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight above 200, then treating them with an aqueous solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide and then heating them to a temperature of 100 DEG C or higher but below the softening point of the polyester for a period of time sufficient to remove the water present. The polyalkylene glycol which may be a polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol may be applied to the filaments in concentrated form or as a 10-50% by weight aqueous solution by padding, spraying or by means of an applicator roll so that 0.1-2% by weight of the polyalkylene glycol is applied to the filaments. The polyalkylene glycol may be applied to the filaments prior to or after stretching. The concentration of the alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide solution may be 0.01 - 25% by weight and application may be effected by padding, spraying or by means of an applicator roll preferably at room temperature or below. In the case of unstretched polyester filaments the temperature of the hydroxide solution should not exceed the second order transition temperature although after stretching temperatures up to 100 DEG C may be used. After the application of the polyalkylene glycol and hydroxide solution the filaments may be heated at a temperature of 100 DEG C or higher but below the softening point of the polyester by means of a hot plate, hot roll, heating tube or radiant heating for from a fraction of a second up to 5 minutes until the water present has been removed. The treated filaments possess improved bonding by adhesives and sizes, e.g. polyacrylic acid. A polyethenoxylated glyceride may be applied together with the polyalkylene glycol.ALSO:Films made from a normally solid synthetic linear polyester are rendered antistatic by treating them with a polyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight above 200, then treating them with an aqueous solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide and then heating them to a temperature of 100 DEG C or higher but below the softening point of the polyester for a period of time sufficient to remove the water present. The polyalkylene glycol which may be a polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol may be applied to the films in concentrated form or as a 10 - 50% by weight aqueous solution by spraying or by means of an applicator roll. The concentration of the alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide solution may be 0.01 - 25% by weight and application may be effected by spraying or by means of an applicator roll preferably at room temperature or below. After the application of the polyethylene glycol and hydroxide solution the films may be heated at a temperature of 100 DEG C or higher but below the softening point of the polyester by means of a hot plate, hot roll, heating tube or radiant heating for from a fraction of a second up to 5 minutes until the water present has been removed. The treated films possess improved bonding by adhesives and sizes.
