Abstract

1,093,659. Sterilizing packaging material. F. GOLDSMITH and E. GOLDSMITH. March 31, 1965 [April 3, 1964], No. 13576/65. Heading A5G. [Also in Divisions D1 and F4] A continuous web, e.g. of packaging paper, is sterilized on at least one side by contact with a liquid sterilizing agent and is then dried and maintained in sterile condition until it reaches the packaging machine by contact with a flow of hot, sterile air. In the apparatus shown, a coated paper web 58 is sterilized on one side by passage over a flanged roll 44 in trough 46 whilst a sterilizing liquid, e.g. chlorine solution, is applied by a horizontal spray 62 and runs down one side of the web to the trough. The web passes on through a drying chute 66 through which hot air passes in the opposite direction from a heater-blower 74 and from thence it passes to the packaging machine 10.
