Abstract

1,092,683. Overload release clutches. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. March 4, 1966 [Jan. 18, 1965], No. 2118/65. Heading F2C. An overload release clutch comprises torque transmitting balls 17 carried in radial bases 16 in one clutch element 10 and pressed into engagement with conical recesses 18 in the other clutch element 11 by inclined surfaces 20 on a control sleeve 19 which is normally retained in the clutch engaged position by spring pressed balls 21 engaging in a recess 22 in the sleeve. On overload the interaction between the balls 17, conical recesses 18 and inclined surfaces 20 force the sleeve 19 right to a clutch disengaged position which permits the torque transmitting balls 17 to move radially out of the recesses 18. The balls 21 engage a groove 23 to hold the sleeve 19 in the clutch disengaged position until manually reset.
