Abstract
1,092,488. Electric incandescent lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 21, 1965 [April 24, 1964], No.16823/65. Heading H1F. A tubular incandescent lamp 1 is mounted in an outer sealed envelope by means of a pair of supports 13, 14 which also serve as current supply wires, the support 14 carrying a metal strap 20 surrounding one end of the lamp 1 and being connected to the lead-in wire 5 at this end by a fusible element 21, which may be a length of fuse wire enclosed in a glass envelope 23. The support 13 may be directly connected to the other lead-in wire or a similar strap 20 may be used at each end, the connection between the lead-in wire 5 and the support 13 being a flexible wire, e.g. of nickel. The lamp 1 may be of fused quartz enclosing a tungsten filament 3 in an atmosphere of argon, krypton or xenon containing an addition of iodine, at or above a pressure of 1400 mm. of mercury, the filament being connected by leads 4 to foils 6 embedded in the end pinches and connected to outer leads 5 overlaid by coils of steel or molybdenum wire 19, 22. The outer envelope may comprise a cover glass 9 and a section 8 of glass having a reflecting coating 9<SP>1</SP> on the inner surface, hermetically sealed at the edges and filled with an inert or non-oxidizing gas and preferably an arc quenching gas such as nitrogen. The supports 13, 14 terminate in thimbles 10 mounted in openings in the section 8, which may be of parabolic shape.
