The flow of feed water or gas flow to a "once through" boiler heated by gas from a nuclear reactor is controlled by the difference between inlet gas temperature 5 and outlet steam temperature 7, compared with another parameter which may be manually variable or proportional to water flow, gas outlet temperature, or heat flow. The water flow measurement 14 may be modified by a function generator 15-18 comprising a cam and potentiometer before it is passed through an integrator 10 which sums the signals and passes this sum to a zero reference circuit 11 controlling the water flow. In another arrangement Fig. 4 (not shown) signals representative of heat flow as determined by the rate of flow through the gas and water circuits multiplied by the temperature difference, are compared, from which a further signal is developed which modifies the output of circuit 11.
