Abstract
Novel compounds of the general formula <FORM:1091999/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are alkyl radicals; X is a carbonyl, b -hydroxymethylene or b -alkanoyl-oxymethylene radical or a radical of the general formula <FORM:1091999/C2/2> wherein R11 is a hydrogen atom or an alkanoyl radical and A is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and the wavy lines in the above formulae indicate the presence of the a or b configuration at carbon atoms 9 and 11 are obtained by a process which comprises (a) the reduction of the 9(11) linkage of a compound of the general formula <FORM:1091999/C2/3> wherein R and R1 are as defined above and X1 is a carbonyl, b -hydroxymethylene, or a -alkyl-b -hydroxymethylene radical, with hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst and, if desired, when a 17-keto starting material is used, (b) alkynylation or alkenylation of the 17-keto group to provide those compounds of Formula (I) wherein A is an unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, or reduction of the 17-keto group to provide those compounds of Formula (I) wherein X is b -hydroxymethylene, followed by, when 17-alkanoates are desired, (c) acylation of the resulting 17-hydroxy compounds.
