Abstract

1,091,691. Ice-making. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 22, 1965 [March 2, 1964], No. 7613/65. Heading F4H. Ice scraped from the wall of a cylindrical freezing chamber 26 by an auger 28 is compacted in the upper part of the chamber against a surface 54 to form an annular rotating mass from which pieces of substantially uniform cross - sectional dimensions are sequentially broken off and discharged through a rectangular opening 56. A conduit 14 conveys the pieces from opening 56 to a storage bin (Fig. 1, not shown) and has a diameter only slightly greater than the maximum transverse dimension of the pieces of ice so that the latter are maintained in end-to-end relationship and are advanced through the conduit solely by the pressure exerted by the incoming pieces. The compacted ice in the freezing chamber is guided towards opening 56 by a member 60 having a cylindrical portion 61 and a tangential portion (62) (Fig. 3, not shown) which extends into opening 56 and, with the wall of the freezing chamber, defines a passage of gradually decreasing cross-section in which the ice is further compacted and then broken into said pieces.
