Abstract
1,091,225. Machine for making swabs. DR. CARL HAHN KOMM-GES. Oct. 20, 1966, No. 47018/66. Heading A5R. A machine for the manufacture of swabs by providing fibrous material 46 on the ends of small sticks comprises a wheel 18 for transporting the sticks 21 to a place for applying the fibrous material, there being provided on the periphery of the wheel pairs of rollers 35 each rotating in the same direction and adapted for rotating the sticks about their longitudinal axes while they are transported. As shown, the machine includes a device 22 feeding the sticks to the pairs of rotating rollers 35, wheels 63 (36) applying adhesive to each end of each stick, a device (see also Figures 6, 7, not shown) including rollers 47, 48 (41, 42) which separates the fibrous material into tufts, sponges 78 supplied with water and used to dampen the swabs, and a conveyor 81 removing the swabs, The fibrous material may be cotton, rayon, artificial fibres, or a mixture of these, and the machine also includes a switch 40 (38) which switches off the machine when the supply of sticks to the wheel 18 fails. The wheel 18 is in two parts separated by a fixed toothed wheel 74 and, as the wheel 18 rotates, cogs 73 fixed to the rollers 35 are moved with the wheel 18 and are rotated against the fixed wheel 74. The device providing the tufts of fibrous material to the machine comprises (see also Figures 6, 7, not shown) two pairs of intermittently rotating rollers (41, 42) and two pairs of continuously rotating rollers 47, 48, the rollers (41) 47 being intermittently driven from the main drive shaft of the machine through a chain (61) and an electro magnetic brake device. Shaped channel members 76, 77 (see also Figure 11, not shown) form the tufts on the rotating sticks to the required shape and retain the swabs on the wheel 18 until they are removed at the conveyor 81.
