Abstract

A process for the separation of CO2 and/or H2S from gaseous mixtures comprises passing the mixture through an absorber in contact with an absorbent liquor comprising an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of a weak acid, passing the liquor containing dissolved CO2 and/or H2S into a regenerator where the liquor is heated and stripped with steam to regenerate the liquor and liberate the acidic gases which pass with steam to a cooler/collector and then to a separator/accumulator followed by a second such arrangement returning all the first condensate and at least part of the second to the regenerated liquor, preferably to the upper part of the regenerator containing a packed zone. The surplus condensate from the second separator/accumulator may be treated for desorption of acidic gases and used as boiler feed water. Preferably a zone of fine packed material, e.g. wire gauze, is included after the first separator/accumulator to remove entrained absorbent liquor which is returned to the first separator/accumulator. Specified alkali metal salts are potassium carbonate and tripotassium phosphate.
