Abstract

109,105. Mond, A., (Schmidt, W. A.). Sept. 5, 1916. Alkali-metal compounds.-Potassium and other alkali-metal compounds are separated from mineral silicates such as felspar and from other potashbearing substances, by roasting in presence of lime or other alkaline earth and preferably also in presence of sulphurdioxide and oxygen, and cooling the fume to obtain the volatile potassium &c. compounds as condensed particles which are separated in an electric separator. The process may be used in connexion with the manufacture of cement. Clay, lime, &c. are roasted in a kiln 1 heated by a burner 2 in which preferably an oil containing sulphur is burnt. The fume passes by a flue 4 into an electric separator 5 containing collecting electrodes 8 in the form of plates or screens earthed at 16 and discharge electrodes 7 consisting of wires connected to thesecondary winding of a transformer 12 through a rectifier 13. Dust is separated from the fume and falls into the earlier bins 11 and potassium compounds condensed owing to the cooling of the fume are collected in the later bins. The products may be leached to separate potassium compounds or may be passed again through the kiln. The process may be carried out by heating the materials in an ore-roaster kept at about 1000‹ C. and passing through it the vapours from a pyrites burner, or a smelting or other furnace in which sulphur dioxide is formed. Dust &c. may be separated from the vapours before they enter or after they leave the roaster. The vapours which leave the roaster are passed through a tubular cooler and through an electric separator comprising tubular collecting electrodes with axial discharge electrodes.
