Abstract

A flux coated electrode for depositing cast iron weld metal comprises a steel core wire and a flux coating which contains Si, C and 20-65% by weight finely divided Fe in addition to the fluxing agents. The Fe is added as a powder or as filings or as powdered cast iron, ferro carbon or high carbon iron. The fluxes are limestone and fluorspar with sodium and/or potassium silicate as a binder, the powdered coating materials being extruded on to the core wire. Ni or a Ni alloy powder may be added to the coating and in order to form a spheroidal cast iron weld a spheroidizing agent such as Ca, Mg or Re may be added e.g. as Fe-Si-Mg. The coating volume to wire volume ranges from 1.5-1 to 3.5-1. The coating has the following composition range:- .Fe/Si.10-60% by weight .Fe or Fe/C or cast iron.20-65% .Graphite.4-30% .CaCO3/CaF2.10-40% .Ni.0-8% .Spheroidizing agent (optional).0.5-5%
