Abstract
The acetylene content of crude ethylene is reduced by contact with a catalyst solution comprising an aqueous solution of a mercuric salt whereby acetylene is catalytically hydrated to acetaldehyde. A preferred catalyst comprises an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid containing mercuric sulphate and ferric sulphate. The process takes place at 60 DEG -100 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure to 100 p.s.i.g. The catalyst may be regenerated during or after the process by passing air or oxygen through the catalyst solution. Batch or continous processes may be used.ALSO:Acetaldehyde is obtained in the purification of ethylene gases containing acetylene by contacting the gas mixture with a catalyst comprising an aqueous solution of a mercuric salt, whereby the acetylene is converted to acetaldehyde. The gas mixture may contain added air or oxygen. The catalyst is preferably mercuric sulphate and ferric sulphate dissolved in aqueous sulphuric acid. The reaction takes plae at 60-100 DEG C. and at atmospheric to 100 p.s.i.g. The purified ethylene may subsequently be catalytically oxidized to produce further acetaldehyde.
