Abstract

A liquid flux for pickling metal surfaces prior to hot dipping in molten metal comprises a zinc halide with at least one condensed zinc ammine and/or amine. By condensed zinc ammine and/or amine is meant at least one addition compound of zinc chloride and an organic amine and/or ammonia the molecules of which are condensed to form a polymer type structure. The flux may also contain ammonium chloride and may be formed by either of the following methods 1. A solution of zinc chloride and ammonium chloride in concentrated aqueous ammonia is evaporated. 2. Gaseous ammonia passed into molten zinc chloride with or without ammonium chloride at 180 DEG - 300 DEG C. The flux may be used in hot dipping with Pb, Zn, Al, Sn and their alloys and is exemplified in coating steel with Pb, Zn and Al. Prior to coating with Zn or Al the steel may be dipped in molten Pb.
