Abstract

1,090,250. Straightening. TURNER & SEYMOUR MANUFACTURING CO. June 15, 1965 [Dec. 21, 1964], No. 25220/65. Heading B3E. Apparatus for straightening elongated workpieces comprises at least three work-holders positioned in series along a longitudinal axis and adapted to engage a workpiece arranged with its centre line in general alignment with said axis, means to vibrate at least one of the work-holders transversely of the said axis, and means for varying the magnitude of said workholder movement between a maximum vibratory movement and a minimum vibratory movement. An elongated workpiece to be straightened is positioned in a channel, whose major cross-sectional dimension is vertical, defined by alternately arranged work-holders 16, 18. The work-holders 16 are fixed and the work-holders 18 are vibrated transversely of the workpiece by levers 42 pivoted on fixed axes 72, Fig. 5, and rocked by a motor driven eccentric shaft 118. The eccentric 118 rocks a lever 74 pivoted at 76, the lever 74 in turn rocking the levers 42. The pivot 76 is moved relatively to the eccentric and lever 42 so as to vary the amplitude of the vibration given to the work-holders 18. The movement of the pivot 76 is effected by a pneumatically actuated piston rod 84 the stroke of which is reversed by a switch 87. After the amplitude of the vibrations has been reduced to a minimum with the workpiece in the vertical channel, the workpiece is positioned in a second channel, defined by the opposed work-holders, whose major cross-sectional axis is horizontal and the straightening operation is repeated.
