Abstract

1,090,245. Bookbinding. H. BIEL, and A. LEUZE, [trading as HANS BIEL]. May 21, 1965 [May 22, 1964], No. 21521/65. Heading B6A. In apparatus for applying first one side cover 3, Fig. 1 (not shown), and then another side cover 3 to the opposite side of a block of leaves or signatures 1 bound together by a spine band 2, the blocks of leaves &c. B, Fig. 2, are fed with their spines facing downwardly to a coverapplying station by known means along a conveyer track comprising a base 10, one upright wall 11, and opposed endless belts 12, 13 which are driven at the speed of the conveying means. At the cover-applying station, there is a frame comprising fingers 14 pivoted to a base 16, and urged backwardly by a spring 24 against a cam 23 to allow a side cover 3, which is already coated with adhesive to be fed downwardly along guides 17 to a predetermined position in front of a block B. The cam 23 is connected to a pin 22, Fig. 3 (not shown), passing through the base 16 and secured to one end of a crank arm 18. The base 16 is also pivoted to one end of a second crank arm 19, and both arms 18, 19 are secured to shafts which are driven from chain gearing 21, and pass through a bearing member 20 which is displaceably mounted on fixed bars 25 by springs 27. The arrangement is such that, as the block B is fed through the cover-applyng station, the cover 3 is fed into position, the cam 23 presses the frame 14 to urge the cover 3 against the block B, and the crank arms 18, 19 move the base 16 and frame 14 forward at the same speed as the block B. The blocks B are held upright at the cover-applying station by a thread 28 which can be moved at the speed of the blocks B. The springs 24, 27 are opposed in action, and the springs 27 ensure a constant pressure on the covers 3 and blocks B. The other side cover 3 is applied by a similar apparatus in a section where the upright wall 11 and pressure frame 11 are on the opposite side of the conveyer track.
