Abstract
Copolymers of ethylene, one or more alphaolefines, and 0.5 to 50 mole per cent, with reference to the mono-olefin mixture, of transdecatriene-(1,4,9) are made by polymerizing a mixture of the monomers, preferably in the presence of a catalyst comprising a compound of Group I, II or III, of the Mendeleef Periodic System containing at least one hydrogen atom or alkyl group attached to the metal atom, and a compound of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa. An ether, thioether, amine, or phosphine, may also be included in the catalyst as a modifying agent. The copolymerization may be effected in bulk, but is preferably carried out in an inert organic solvent. The alpha-olefin may be propylene, butene-(1), pentene-(1), hexene-(1), decene-(1), or 4-methylpentene-(1). Exemplified catalysts are vanadium oxytrichloride and ethyl aluminium sesquichloride, vanadium tetrachloride and triisobutyl aluminium, vanadium oxytrichloride and methyl aluminium sesquichloride, and vanadium triacetylacetonate and diethyl aluminium monochloride. Exemplified copolymers are of ethylene, propylene, and trans - decatriene-(1,4,9), and ethylene, propylene, butene-1, and trans-decatriene. The copolymers are recovered by conventional techniques for "low-pressure" methods of polymerization, and vulcanized with sulphur-containing mixes.
