Abstract

An explosive composition comprises particulate explosive material coated with solid polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in an amount for example of 1-5% by weight of the composition. The composition may be made by mixing the particulate ingredients, or by making a dispersion of PTFE in water or an organic liquid and mixing this with the explosive in particulate or molten form. Light pressing of the mixture produces a plastic mass suitable for extrusion or moulding to form detonating or safety fuse cord, shaped charges, detonators, boosters, propellents, or explosive sheets for metal forming; such sheets may be strengthened by the addition of cellulose. Examples describe the coating with PTFE of (1)-(7) and (10) PETN to form explosive pellets, cords, or sheets; NaCl is added in varying amounts to adjust the velocity of detonation; (8) RDX to form a shaped charge; (9) TNT to form an explosive sheet; (11) black powder to form a safety fuse composition or a blasting powder; (12) pentolite (PETN/TNT) to form an explosive sheet; the velocity of detonation is adjusted by addition of NaCl; (13) KClO4 to form a plastic propellent composition; (14) ammonium nitrate/ TNT to form an explosive sheet. Other explosive materials mentioned as suitable for coating are tetryl, styphnic acid, and explosive mixtures containing chlorates, perchlorates, or nitrates of sodium, potassium, calcium, or ammonia.
