Abstract

1,089,280. Discharge apparatus. N. B. AGDUR, and U. E. TERNSTRÍM. March 11, 1965 [March 23, 1964; Jan. 28, 1965], No. 10461/65. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H3] A noise generator comprises a discharge chamber with cathode and anode electrodes and a gas filling at a pressure of 10<SP>-4</SP> to 10<SP>-2</SP> mm Hg, means for generating a static magnetic field in the discharge chamber, the strength of the magnetic field and the electron density of the plasma which is formed being such that both the electron cyclotron frequency and the plasma frequency are higher than the highest frequency of the appreciable noise components generated, and an output circuit for the generated noise. In Fig. 1 two cathodes 10 are supported by disc seals 13 in the ends of cylinders 11, 11 forming an anode. A magnetic field is generated by a winding 14. A waveguide 12, sealed from the discharge chamber by microwavepermeable plates 17 and tuned by a piston 18, forms the output circuit. Modifications (Figs. 3 to 27, not shown) of this arrangement comprise the following. The cathodes and anode are of oval cross-section (Fig. 3). The output circuit is a rectangular coaxial line tuned by a double piston (Figs. 5, 6 and 7). A hole through the inner conductor to allow passage of the discharge may be oval (Fig. 8). A separate discharge tube with two anodes and two cathodes is inserted through a waveguide (Fig. 4) or through a rectangular coaxial line (Fig. 11). A portion of rectangular coaxial line is sealed off to form a discharge tube (Figs. 9 and 10). The cathodes are parts of the inner conductor (Figs. 12 and 13) or of the outer conductor (Fig. 14) of a cylindrical coaxial line, or the anodes are parts of a hollow inner conductor of a cylindrical coaxial line which surround separate cathodes (Fig. 15). A cylindrical anode surrounds two cathodes in the form of flared rectangular waveguides (Figs. 16 and 17). An anode and cathode form parts of the envelope of a toroidal arrangement (Figs. 18 and 19). Apertured discs or grids (Figs. 21 to 25) are mounted between the cathodes in an arrangement (Fig. 20) similar to Fig. 1, or in any of the other arrangements having two cathodes. A helix (Fig. 26) or system of interdigitated discs (Fig. 27) in the discharge space form part of the output circuit.
