Abstract

A knitted fabric, particularly a stocking, is produced from a composite filament in which different components composed of linear thermoplastic synthetic polymers with different shrinkabilities are disposed in side-by-side or in an eccentric sheath-core relationship with one another along the length of the composite filament. The filament is given a twist such that over the length of the filament required for forming a stitch the angle of twist is at least 20 degrees. In one example, polycaproamide and a polymer obtained by polymerizing 15 parts of hexamethylene diammonium terephthalate and 85 parts of e -caprolactam in an atmosphere of nitrogen gas at 260 DEG C were simultaneously spun together through an orifice to form a side-by-side type filament with a conjugation ratio of 1:1 by volume. Having then been drawn to a length 4.4 times its original length it was given a twist of 170 turns per metre which was fixed by heating at 70 DEG C for 10 minutes whereupon the filament was knitted and the resultant fabric treated with saturated steam at 110 DEG C for 5 minutes. Following this the fabric was dyed and placed on aluminium boards and then set at 120 DEG C for 45 seconds in saturated steam with subsequent drying and cooling. The filaments were found to have a twist of 60-120 degrees per unit stitch length. Different forms of nylon may be similarly spun and given a false twist treatment of about 1500 turns per metre. After heated plate treatment to remove the residual torque the filament was knitted as before to give the required stitch formation. Generally, for any composite filament produced the sequence involves twisting, heat fixing, knitting and subsequent heat finishing of the fabric to produce the required fabric appearance and stitch structure.
