Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A web of sheet material is expanded laterally by passing over a roller comprising a plurality of elastic rubber strips 9 on the surface of metal cylinder 10, each strip being attached at each end to an adjustable swash plate mechanism (Fig. 1). The surface of the cylinder 10 has formed integrally therewith or attached thereto, guide strips 11, which strips form guide channels for the rubber strips 9. Grooves 26 in the rubber strips 9 are engaged by the edges of the strips 11 and prevent the rubber strips 9 lifting from the surface of the cylinder when rotated at high speed. Each swash plate mechanism (Fig. 1) comprises two rings (5 and 8) which are clamped together to retain the ends of the rubber strips 9 by screws (7). The rings (5, 8) are rotatably mounted on a second two-part disc (13, 14) which is adjustably inclined with respect to shaft 1 of the metal cylinder 10.
