Abstract
<PICT:1088293/C1/1> In the formation of an adsorbent filtering medium 1 streams of molten glass are attenuated into fibres 2 and discrete particles 6a, 6b of odour adsorbent are dispersed among the fibres 2 before they are gathered into a mass, the formation of the mass forming passageways between the fibres and voids 3 which are formed adjacent the particles, at least some of which particles 6b are larger than the passageways. The particles 6a, 6b are fed into the gas attenuated fibre 2 below fibre forming bushings (12) at the top of a hood (15) which leads the fibres down to the upper flight of a conveyer belt (16) driven at such a rate that the fibres 2 are formed into a mat (18). Preferably at the same time, a binder 5 is fed into the hood (15) which bonds the fibres 2 and also holds the particles 6a 6b, in position. The mat (18) is as usual, compressed by a roller (22) and conveyers (25), (26) in a furnace or cooling box (24) according to the particular binding used. The odour adsorbent may constitute 3-25% by weight of the structure, with particles from 1/16 th to 3/8 ths inch in diameter.
