Abstract

<PICT:1088013/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1088013/C6-C7/2> An electrolytic grinding wheel comprises at least two different grinding sections, one of which is electrically conductive and the other of which is electrically non-conductive or insulated. As shown, for side-grinding a workpiece 6 to which an electrolytic solution 9 is supplied, conducting sections 1, 1' are mounted one each side of a non-conducting section 2 on a shaft 3 made of conducting material. With this apparatus, electrolytic rough grinding can be followed by mechanical finish grinding by breaking the electrical circuit with a switch 4. The grinding wheel may be assembled on a metal support 15 and constructed of diamond layers 12, 12' mounted on metal spacers 16, 16' and a diamond layer 14 mounted on plastic spacers 13. Fig. 5 (not shown), illustrates diamond layers (12, 12', 13) assembled concentrically on a metal cup-shaped support of a face-grinder. Fig. 6 (not shown), illustrates a side-grinding wheel in which non-conducting sections (2, 2') are mounted one each side of a conducting section (1) on a shaft (3) to avoid the electrolysis effect on the edge of the workpiece (6). In this embodiment, plastic spacers (13, 13') Fig. 7 (not shown) are provided with projections for locking purposes. The abrasive substance may be in a plastic matrix in the non-conductive section but when a metal matrix is used the sections must be insulated from one another with for example plastic inserts, 20, Fig. 8 (not shown). The grinding sections may be in the form of strip-segments mounted either longitudinally, Fig. 9 (not shown), or helically, Fig. 10 (not shown) around a cylindrical support; alternatively, the segments may be mounted radially on a face-grinder, Figs. 11, 11a (not shown). The non-conducting or insulated sections may have a higher concentration of abrasive substances, a larger grain size or a grinding area larger than that of the conducting or insulated sections; alternatively, diamonds may be employed in the non-conducting or insulated sections and corundum in the conducting sections.
