A table for a machine operating on work supported thereon comprises a flexible band 25 carried by a frame 10 having a carriage 16 mounted for movement therealong, and a plurality of support bars 53 for supporting the flexible band, the bars passing through the carriage as it moves along the frame. The work 48, such as a plurality of layers of cloth is supported on the flexible band for cutting in any direction by a tool 31 in the form of a thin barbed wire 31 which, at one end is connected to an overarm 30 of the carriage 16 and at the other end is connected to a reciprocatory motor 32. The overarm 30 and motor 32 are carried by a slide 28 movable transversely of the frame along ways 27 in the carriage by a motor 45 driving a pinion 46 engaging a rack 47, and the carriage 16 is movable longitudinally of the frame along ways 17 by a motor 33 driving pinions 37 engaging racks 39 on side members 15 of the frame; the motors 33, 35 may be controlled by a punched or magnetic tape to move the slide and carriage so that the tool 31 cuts the material in a desired pattern. The carriage 16 has a pair of upper rollers 18, 19 and a pair of lower rollers 21, 22, and the flexible band has its opposite ends secured to end members 12, 13 of the frame and passes over the upper rolls and under the lower rolls to form a loop 26, the tool 31 reciprocating in a gap 26a formed by the loop. During movement of the carriage the gap moves with the tool as the band passes over the rolls. The band is supported by the support bars 53 which are formed with bores 54 Fig. 3 at their ends slidably receiving plungers 60 which, when extended, engage slots 52 in rails 50, 51 carried by the side members 14, 15 of the frame to provide support for the flexible band. The support bars are joined together by cables 56 which are clamped to the bottoms of the bores 54 by screws 58 and are secured to the end members 12, 13 of the frame 10. The carriage 16 is provided with two pairs of cams 63, one pair on each of its opposite sides, each cam having an inclined groove 64 for engaging pins 61 extending from the plungers so that as the carriage approaches a bar, its plungers are retracted from the grooves, and as the carriage leaves a bar its plungers are extended into the grooves, the support bars travelling, when disconnected from the rails, with the flexible band around the rolls 18, 19, 21, 22, the upper rolls having grooves 20 to receive the support bars. The flexible band may be of leather, fabric, wire mesh, thin stainless steel or other flexible material.
