Abstract

1,086,733. Radio navigation. DECCA Ltd. July 16, 1965 [July 31, 1964], No. 30353/64. Heading H4D. The invention relates to a receiver in a hyperbolic navigation system of the type disclosed in Specifications 765,573 and 949,480, wherein each station in turn produces a multi-frequency transmission during periodic interruption in the normal transmissions said receiver using only one received frequency, and comprising a tuned receiver stage 11, tuned in this embodiment to the frequency normally produced by the master station. The receiver also comprises a phasecontrolled oscillator 14 operating at said frequency and feeding its output to one input of a phase discriminator 13 having the output of the receiver stage 11 applied to its other input. During the normal transmissions, the signal from the master station is thus compared in phase with the output of the oscillator, and a signal equal to the sine of the phase difference is used to control the phase of the oscillator via closed relay contact 17, such that the oscillator output is phase locked to the normal master station transmission. Break detector 18 detects the break in transmission of a specific length occurring at the end of the normal transmission period, and the beginning of the multi-frequency transmission period, and actuates a relay, such that contact 17 opens, and contacts 21 and 22 close. The signal in the multifrequency transmission at said frequency is received in stage 11 and compared in phase with the output of oscillator 14, still locked to the master station normal transmission. The sine output of the phase discriminator together with a cosine output is fed via contacts 21 and 22 to a selector switch 24. The selector switch is controlled by a connector 28 which in turn is controlled by the break detector 18, such that the two outputs are fed to the one of three phase difference indicators allocated to the slave station giving the multi-frequency transmission. There are thus provided three differential phase indications based on three confocal hyperbolic isophase systems having foci at the master station and at the respective slave station and having lane widths corresponding to the normal frequency of the master station. To overcome phase ambiguities, each phase difference indicator may comprise a cycle integration counter or form part of an automatic chart position indicator.
