[Also in Division Fl] A toilet unit wherein sewage is pumped under pressure comprises-(a) a toilet bowl A with a discharge outlet D from the bowl and flushing-water inlet openings G as shown (Fig. 7); (b) an inlet 30 (Fig. 2) to supply pressure. liquid; (c) a hydraulically-actuated pumping; unit 19 between the inlet 30 and the bowl A, which includes (1) an oscillator 16 actuated through a pump at 14 connected through a directional-control mechanism 17 to the inlet 30 and reciprocated by the liquid supplied thereto, (2) a pump section in the cylinder 14 actuated thereby,. communicating with the dis-. charge outlet D, and (3) check valves 41a, 41 b to prevent backflow into the outlet D from the pump cylinder 14; (d) a conduit E to supply liquid received therein through the passages 80 (Fig. 3) from the mechanism 17 to the inlet openings G during actuation of the pump section; and (c) a primary valve 90 (Fig. 7) in the inlet 30 to control the supply of liquid to the mechanism 17. The liquid supply makes the oscillator 16 act to move one of the check valves 41a, 41b to be open and the other closed, the pump pressure assisting to keep a check valve closed. The pump in the cylinder 14 is double-acting and has pistons 24, 18, one at each end of the shaft 22 to pump material received therein from the discharge outlet D. The displacement of the actuator piston 24 is less than that of the pump piston 18 and is preferably in the ratio 2 to 3 to ensure clearance of all sewage from the surface bowl A. Sewage from the outlet is received in a conduit 50 (Fig. 3) in the housing 13 which includes the pump cylinder 14, a pair of valves 60, 61 (in a unit 11 (Fig. 7)) in a continuous passage 52 centrally below the conduit 50 being alternately opened and closed to communicate between the conduit 50 and the respective sides 14a, 14b of the cylinder 14, by the pressure of water received from the mechanism 17. Sewage is thus admitted from the passage 52 into communicating passages 51a, 51A and then into the cylinder 14 for ultimate discharge.
