Abstract

1,086,605. Toolholders. ROLLS ROYCE Ltd. March 21, 1966, No. 12412/66. Heading B3T. A lathe tool holder comprising an indexable tool post 10 which supports a tool at each of two sides, screws 64 for clamping the tools, an adjustable block 14 which carries a template 16 for setting the tools, each of the latter being moved into engagement with the template by pegs 53, Fig. 2, which are actuated by rotating a screw 31, Fig. 3. A vertical spindle 24 is keyed for axial movement in post 10 by a key 27, and screw 31 is screwed into the spindle, and held against axial movement in the body, by split collars 34. The spindle has a recess 40, 41 inclined to its axis which co-operates with an inclined land 51 on a horizontal spindle 42, the latter having flats 51, 52 which co-operate with the spring-urged pegs 53. A tool supporting screw 56 is carried in a pivoting latch 57, and an end screw for adjusting the tool longitudinally is provided for each tool. In operation, each tool is set by rotating screw 31 which moves spindle 24 vertically, and therefore spindle 42 horizontally, the pegs 53 thus urging the tool so that its cutting end 21 engages the shoulder 20 of the template. The tool is clamped, and the template removed, and after the tool has completed its operation, it trips an arm to control a mechanism, which withdraws and indexes the tool post.
