A gas lighter is operated by means of a lever E which when moved in the direction of the arrow rocks about its rear tubular pivot 1 and depresses a link 5 by means of downwardly opening semi-circular recesses 3 which fit. over the link. pivot 4, the link in turn being pivoted at its top end 6 to a member 8 carrying a catch. 7 which rotates. about flint wheel spindle 9 and drives the flint wheel 10 by engaging ratchet teeth 21, Fig. 4 (not. shown), on one side of the wheel. Also as the lever E is actuated a projection 15 contacts one end of a lever 16 and depresses it against the action of a spring 17, the lever 16 pivoting at 9 and its opposite forked end lifting off a collar 24 on burner nozzle 22 so that a spring 23 and the gas pressure will open the gas valve F. The link 6 carries a pivot 12 for a bar 13 provided with a notch in which is engaged one end of a hair-pin spring 14, the other end of which abuts the upper wall of the gas container B. The springs 14 and 17 return the levers E and 16 to their inoperative positions, respectively. The lever E has a front extension 28 which on the lever's return stroke abuts against the spindle 9. The flame height is adjusted by rotating a wheel 25 which alters the throttling action of a member 26. A hood D retains the lever E in position and is held on to the lighter head A by a snap system 30 at its front end and by a projection 31a of a sliding bolt 31 acted upon by a spring 32 at its rear end. The lower projection 31b of the bolt bears against the inner surface of a casing C holding it thereby in position over the gas container B.
