Abstract

1,085,654. Making cigarette mouthpieces. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. and T. ROWLANDS. May 8, 1964 [May 9, 1963], No. 18423/63. Heading A2C. Apparatus for forming a continuous mouthpiece rod consisting of lengths of filter material comprises cutting means to slit longitudinally the individual paper wrapper which is folded and sealed around before the lengths of filter material are further compressed by a continuous paper wrapper which is folded and sealed around the rod. Stubs S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP> of different material are fed alternately from two hoppers on to a perforated conveyer 3. Air is drawn through by a suction chamber 4 which is connected to a fan. The stubs are carried under a rotatable worm 15 transferring the stubs across a bridge piece 18 on to a continuous paper wrapper 9 carried by a conveyer 8. The stubs are gripped between an endless belt 30 running beneath a shoe 31 and the wrapper 9 on the conveyer 8. A disc knife 100 slits the wrappers of the stubs allowing the cut edges to overlap to eliminate an air channel that might be formed during compressing by the folder 10 of the continuous paper wrapper 9. Gumming and sealing devices secure the wrapper to form a continuous mouthpiece rod which is severed at suitable intervals.
