Abstract

1,085,213. Belt or chain tensioning devices. BORG WARNER Ltd. July 19, 1965 [Aug. 18, 1964], No. 33748/64. Heading F2Q. A belt or chain tensioner comprises a pivoted arm 3 with a rubber or synthetic rubber or plastics wear pad 4 urged against a chain or belt by a spring urged rotary snail cam 6, which is biased anticlockwise to place the largest radius possible against the arm 3, and whose clockwise rotation is limited by a self-energizing friction brake allowing a small resiliently controlled initial rotation. The friction brake comprises a helical spring 7, Fig. 2 (not shown), with one end 18 in a hole 1 and in a fixed top plate 8 mounted on a base 1 and the helical turns thereof frictionally engaging a cylindrical extension 15 of the cam 6. Anticlockwise rotation of the cam 6 is allowed by the spring 7 tending to unwind and clockwise rotation tends to tighten the spring turns on the extension 15, which is after a small initial rotation frictionally locked. A spiral spring 5 urges the cam 6 and is engaged with and situated between the cam extension 15 and a reduced portion 17 of the cam mounting spindle 16. The cam extension 15 has a projection 24 for engaging with the top plate 8 to limit cam rotation. The arm 3 has a curled end either pivotally engaged in a circular groove of the base 1 or surrounding a pin fast with the top plate 8 and press fitted in the base 1. The base 1 has a bore 22 for directing oil on to the tensioned chain which communicates with a groove in the rear of the base for receiving pressure oil when mounted on an engine in a timing chain drive.
