Abstract

In apparatus for producing a pattern on a textile or like web by spraying, the colour liquid is sprayed continuously and the spray is intermittently deflected onto or away from the web to form the patterning, the spray liquid not applied to the web being collected and re-cycled. In Fig. 3 colour liquid pressure in a chamber 7 sprays through a series of nozzles 8 extending across the width of the web 1. Associated with each nozzle is a tongue 9 which in its lower position (as shown) deflects the spray 3 onto a plate 10 and into a collecting chamber 12 to be pumped to chamber 7. If the tongue 9 is lifted in direction M the spray passes through an orifice in a plate 14 and onto the web 1; in this way patterns may be produced on the web. In an alternative form the liquid is sprayed by a grooved roller rotating in a liquid bath. In a further form (Fig. 9 not shown) the spray from each nozzle- (8) may be downwardly deflected by a jet of compressed air controlled by a needle valve. In Fig. 11 the colour liquid 5 falls from a trough in a spray parallel to the web 1 and into a collecting chamber 12; the spray may be stabilized by vertically stretched wires 34 therein. The spray is deflected onto the web by compressed air from a nozzle 8, the pattern being determined by an endless stencil bard 35 continuously passing across the mouth of the nozzle. In an alternative form (Fig. 12 not shown) a series of compressed air nozzles is arranged across the width of the falling spray and the nozzles are individually activated by needle valves to form the pattern. In Fig. 13 (not shown) a series of nozzles (8) spray liquid approximately perpendicularly towards the web, each spray passing between electrodes or electro-magnets of opposite sign which, when activated, deflect the spray from the web. In Fig. 16 (not shown) the spray from nozzle (8) may be deflected by a jet of compressed air from a flexible hose (43). An armature (47) is provided on the hose and when this is attracted to an electromagnet (48) the end of the hose moves out of alignment with an orifice (46) and the deflecting jet of air no longer strikes the spray. In Fig. 15 (not shown) the spray from a nozzle (8) passes through a nozzle (40) which is charged oppositely to an electrode (41) lying behind the web.
