Abstract
The oxidative dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons, optionally in the presence of a halogen, is effected in the presence of a ferrite catalyst containing oxygen, iron and a metal of Group 2A, 2B or 8 (other than iron). C2-C20 alkanes, alkenes, alkadienes, cycloalkanes or cycloalkenes and alkyl aromatics may be dehydrogenated, dehydrocoupled or aromatized at 250-750 DEG C., 4-125 p.s.i.a., an LHSV of 0.1-25 or a GHSV of 25-6400 with 0.2-5 mols. of oxygen per mol. of hydrocarbon and optionally 0.0001-0.5 mol. of halogen per mol. of hydrocarbon (as halogen or a halide source of halogen) and preferably with 2-40 mols. of steam or other diluent per mol. of hydrocarbon. Examples describe the dehydrogenation of butane and butenes to butenes and butadiene in the presence of ferrites of nickel, zinc, magnesium, barium, strontium, cadmium, calcium and cobalt.
