A door handle assembly comprises a lever handle 14 turnably mounted in a beating hole in a door plate 10, a stop plate 25 which is carried by and turns with the shank 15 of the lever handle, fixed abutments on the door plate 10 and on opposite sides of the handle shank axis with which the stop plate co-operates to determine the range of angular movement of the lever handle, and a handle-loading coil spring 30 which operates between an eccentrically disposed anchorage which turns with the handle shank and one or other of two stationary anchorages, on opposite sides of the handle shank axis, according to the "hand" of the handle. The stationary anchorages for the spring 30 are provided either on a back plate 21, as shown, having a bearing hole which registers with that in the door plate, or on the rear of the door plate, a bearing spigot portion 16 of the shank 15 having the usual square section axial recess 17 to receive a spindle to be operated, is formed immediately rearwardly of the door plate, or back plate, if present, with a transaxial slot 18 which crosses the recess 17, the stop plate 25 has an integral tongue 26 which fits into and extends through the slot 18 so as to retain the shank 15 and back plate, if present, against removal from the door plate, and the spring anchorage 31 which moves with the handle shank is provided in the stop plate and is so disposed that the spring tends to maintain the tongue against withdrawal from the slot 18. As described the stop plate is "L" shaped and has angled end edges 28, 29 adapted to engage a side flange 11 on the door plate to limit the turning movement of the handle in each direction, and has a square through hole to correspond and register with the recess 17. The stationary anchorages for the spring are hook portions 22 on the back plate 21, whose side edges 24 engage with the flange 11 to prevent its rotation. When the handle is to have the other "hand" from that shown the spring is disconnected the stop plate removed, the handle rotated through 180‹, the stop plate replaced after being reversed side to side and the spring connected to the other hook portion 22.
