Abstract

A lubricant composition comprising a polyphenyl ether or polyphenyl polyether, or a mixture thereof and a di-substituted organic tin compound of the general formula [R1-Sn-R2]n where each of R1 and R2 is an aryl group containing two or three benzene rings and n is an integer. The tin compound may be present in an amount from 0.01 to 10% by weight of the ether or polyether or of a mixture thereof. Numerous suitable ethers and tin compounds are listed. ALSO: Organo-tin polymers of general formula [R1-Sn-R2]n in which each of R1 and R2 is an aryl group containing two or three benzene rings and n is an integer, are prepared by the general reaction of aryl halides with a tin dihalide. The benzene rings may be fused or separate. ALSO: Organo-tin compounds of general formula [R1-Sn-R2]n in which each of R1 and R2 is an aryl group containing two or three benzene rings and n is an integer, may be prepared by reaction of aryl magnesium halides with a tin dihalide. The compounds are generally low polymers with n up to ten and the polymeric form is obtained from the monomer upon standing. The benzene rings may be fused or separate. The reactions are carried out under anhydrous conditions in an organic solvent which may be an acyclic ether, e.g. diethyl ether or the dimethyl ether of ethylene glycol or a cyclic ether, e.g. tetrahydrofuran and at a temperature of 50-150 DEG C., e.g. reflux temperature. The compounds, which are used as additives to lubricant compositions comprising a polyphenyl ether or polyphenylpolyether or a mixture of both, may be bisdiphenyltin, dinaphthyltin, diterphenyltin, diphenanthryltin, dianthryltin, diacenaphthyltin, and biphenylylnaphthyl tin.
