Abstract

A method of stiffening the toe or counter of a shoe upper comprises incorporating stiffening means comprising an elastomeric copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. In a first embodiment a molten mass of the copolymer is applied directly to the inner surface of the upper and is allowed to form a continuous layer firmly bonded to the upper. The upper may be lasted before the copolymer is cool, or the copolymer may be allowed to cool as a flat sheet and is subsequently softened by heat for the lasting operation. In a second embodiment a stiffener of suitagle outline shape may be cut out e.g. by a die, from a sheet of the copolymer and skived along its margins or may be formed by compression or injection-moulding the copolymer. The stiffener may be coated on one side or both sides with a pressure-sensitive or heat- or solvent-activatable adhesive. The stiffener is then stuck in position on the inside of the upper using a press and the upper is pulled over a last, heated by a conventional steam heating unit used to condition the upper for lasting and then lasted. Alternatively the upper may be heated and the pulling over and lasting performed in a single operation. When the stiffener is used in an unlined shoe it may be laminated with a light cloth carrying a coating of flock.
