Abstract

Strips of thickness not greater than 0.050 inch and suitable for forming into pipes for land drainage, are formed from compositions comprising a polymer of vinyl chloride or a mixture thereof with not more than 20% of a copolymerizable vinyl compound, together with a modifier whereby said modifier imparts to the strip a tensile strength of at least 6000 lbs./sq. inch and an Izod impact strength of at least 10 ft. lbs./inch notch, the strip being provided with engaging means which permit one or more strips to be united at the edges to form a pipe. Specified modifiers are graft copolymers of alkyl acrylates or methacrylates on polybutadiene, butadiene/styrene copolymers or butadiene/alkyl acrylate copolymers; graft copolymers of a conjugated diolefin, at least one polymerizable monovinyl monomer and optionally a divinyl monomer on polyvinyl chloride; chlorosulphonated polyethylene; cross-linked nitrile rubbers; acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymers; ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers and inorganic fillers. Examples describe strips made of compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, white lead, mineral oil, barium/cadmium stabilizer, titanium dioxide, colourants and as modifiers (1) a graft copolymer of methyl methacrylate on a butadiene/styrene copolymer, (2) a graft copolymer of methyl methacrylate on a butadiene/butyl acrylate copolymer, (3) a graft copolymer of butadiene, acrylonitrile and divinylbenzene on polyvinyl chloride, and (4) an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer.
