An inking arrangement, Fig. 4, for a rotary printing press comprises a fountain 25 defined by a fountain roller 21 and a blade 28, a pan 27 removably mounted below the fountain in a position to receive any ink overflowing therefrom, and a trough 26 located below the fountain in a position to receive ink overflowing therefrom when the pan 27 is not in position, means being provided to feed the fountain with ink selectively from either the pan or the trough so as to convert the press from basic black printing to coloured ink printing. The apparatus includes a plurality of fountains 25 which are separated by partitions 29 and each blade 28 is provided at its bottom end with an extension 31 which scrapes the roller 21 and at its upper end with overflow outlets 32, Fig. 2. The thickness of the ink film on the roller 21 is controlled by a doctor blade 22 which is adjustable via a mechanism 23. In normal black printing, Fig. 2, the trough 26 is supplied with ink through a conduit 36 and contains a float valve 37 which maintains the ink level constant. A pump 38 supplies ink in excess from the trough to the fountains 25 via conduits 40, 41 and flexible pipes 42. To convert the apparatus for colour printing the pipes 42 are disconnected, the fountains 25 and the roller 21 are cleaned, and the pans 27 are pushed into position with their rollers 51 riding on tracks 52. An appropriate ink supply conduit 54 is connected to each pan and the pan outlet hose 57 is connected to the fountain. When in position, the pump 55 of each pan is connected to a motor 60 by means of gears 58, 59, Fig. 4, the pan being held in position by clamps 65. The pan and the trough are provided with screens 62, 43 respectively and the apparatus is provided with sliding mist guards 44.
