Abstract
A phenol/formaldehyde resin is prepared by interacting phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of HCl in a mixture of water and an immiscible organic solvent. The aqueous phase may contain 2-3 mole/l. of formaldehyde and 13-18% HCl and the organic phase 4-6 mole/l. of phenol. The reaction may be at 15-80 DEG C. Solvents specified are benzene, toluene, CCl4, di- and tetrachloroethane and white spirit.
