Abstract

1,082,193. Coating apparatus. DEVILBISS CO. Dec. 7, 1964 [March 13, 1964], No. 49654/ 64. Heading B2L. In electrostatic coating apparatus comprising a linear array of a plurality of spaced similarly charged electrostatic spray guns 10a, 10b, 10c whereby the electrostatic field of each spray gun compresses the adjacent side of the normal electrostatic field of its neighbouring gun, an end electrode 30 is placed at each end of said array spaced from the adjacent gun and charged in the same polarity to a potential effective to compress the deposition pattern of said adjacent gun in substantially the same manner and to substantially the same extent as said pattern is compressed by the presence of the neighbouring gun in said array. The spray guns and the end electrodes are preferably uniformly spaced from each other and are preferably at a uniform distance from the work. The entire array may be reciprocated along its axis by mechanism 15, 17, 13 and 12 powered by motor 16, the stroke of reciprocation being adjustable. For coating large concave panels the distance between the work and the electrodes 30 may be somewhat less than the distance between the work and the spray guns and the voltage on the electrodes may be reduced.
