[Also in Division F4] Apparatus for grinding and drying material such as wet clay lumps comprises a grinder having coaxial cages CE, CI adapted to be partly or wholly immersed in a fluidized bed of the material in a reactor 1, the inner cage CI having bars 5g spaced more widly apart than the bars 5f of the outer cage(s) CE and moving on rotation at a lower peripheral speed than the outer cage(s). In operation, material to be ground is introduced via a conduit 7 into the space between the bars of the cage CI and the shaft 6. Fine grains agitated by fluidization gas F escape from the cage CE downwards, pass through the space between the walls of the reactor and grid 3 and are carried away by the gas flow via a chimney 9 to a separator (not shown). The gas may be heated to facilitate drying. As described, the height H of the reactor 1 above the level of the layer 4 is large enough to permit carrying away of the ground product. More than two grinding cages may be used secured on a single shaft, or the cages may be separately powered and contra-rotating. The bars may be removable to permit adjustment for different granular sizes of material.
